Abstract

Social media has become an important source of political information for young people, but the rapid circulation of misinformation presents significant challenges to informed political participation. This study investigates the relationship between misinformation, social media use, and political behaviour among young people. Using a descriptive research approach, the study examines how inaccurate, misleading, and emotionally charged political content may influence political opinions and participation. The findings indicate that while social media increases access to diverse political perspectives, users may also encounter unreliable information that shapes perceptions and encourages political polarization. Young people with limited media literacy may be particularly vulnerable to misleading content. The study highlights the importance of digital education, fact-checking practices, and responsible platform governance. It concludes that strengthening critical media literacy is essential for supporting informed and constructive political participation in the digital age.
